The Sharingan

The mighty Dojutsu Kekkei Genkai of the Uchiha clan, the Sharingan, is a closely guarded ability. It grants the user immense visual prowess, allowing them to dodge attacks and make decisive strikes. It also allows them to see chakra, and a skilled user can even use Genjutsu through their eyes.

A Sharingan has multiple stages that are unlocked through various ordeals. These stages increase the strength of the Sharingan.

  • Stage 1 (Manifests at 2nd level, 1 chakra point): You unlock the ability to activate your Sharingan. Using an action on your turn, you spend 1 chakra point to activate your eyes. The effects of your eyes last for 1 minute. Your abilities are as follows:

    • Add 1 to your armor class and attack rolls.

    • You can see if a creature is under the effect of a Genjutsu. You must use your action to observe a creature. After your action is spent, you know if that creature is under a Genjutsu.

    • You can faintly see chakra color.

  • Stage 2 (Manifests at 5th level, 2 chakra points): You maintain the abilities from Stage 1, and gain the following abilities:

    • Add 2 to your armor class and attack rolls instead of 1.

    • You gain advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws while your Sharingan are active

    • Copy: You develop the ability to copy Ninjutsu and Taijutsu when you see them used. When you see a Ninjutsu or Taijutsu you wish to copy, you must use your reaction to make an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC of 10 + the rank of the jutsu used (D=2, C=3, B=5, A=7, S/S+= 9). If you succeed, you successfully copy the jutsu. When you copy a jutsu, you temporarily add it to your Jutsu Known and can automatically prepare it without counting against your total jutsu prepared. If you copy a Ninjutsu, it must be one of the five basic natures, or it can be a Kekkei Genkai if you have access to the related jutsu list. Once you take a long rest, your knowledge of this jutsu dissipates.

  • Stage 3 (Manifests at 9th level, 3 chakra points): You maintain the abilities from Stage 2, and gain the following abilities:

    • Add 3 to your armor class and attack rolls instead of 2.

    • While your Sharingan is active, you can make an additional attack when you take the attack action.

    • Sharingan Genjutsu: You target a creature within 30 feet of you as an action. It must make a Wisdom saving throw against your Genjutsu DC. If that creature fails, it becomes paralyzed for 1 hour or until it is released from your Genjutsu. A creature immune to the charmed condition is immune to this effect. If the creature takes damage, it is no longer paralyzed. A creature that is blind or is immune to being charmed or charm effects automatically succeeds on its saving throw. Once a creature is affected by Sharingan Genjutsu, it cannot be affected again for 24 hours.

  • Stage 4 (Manifests at 13th level or when you witness a catastrophe or suffer a loss, 4 chakra points): You maintain the abilities from Stage 3, and gain the following abilities:

    • Add 4 to your armor class and attack rolls instead of 3.

    • Add 2 to your Dexterity Saving Throws.

    • Your Genjutsu sense is passive and no longer requires an action to use.

    • When you use your Copy ability, you permanently add the jutsu to your Jutsu Known list. After you take a Long Rest, you must prepare it as normal.

    • You can use your Deflect Missiles ability without using a Reaction while your eyes are active.

When the Sharingan is active, and the duration of their activation ends, you can spend the required chakra to keep them active, requiring no action.

The Mangekyō Sharingan

An Uchiha has the potential to unlock the mighty Mangekyō Sharingan, but it comes at the cost of experiencing immense emotional trauma tied to the loss of a loved one. The Mangekyō Sharingan is a heightened form of the Sharingan that grants an Uchiha more power. See Mangekyō Sharingan for more information.

Non-Uchiha Users

It is possible for non-Uchiha to possess a Sharingan. It requires them to implant a Sharingan into their skull, which means they must have room for it (i.e. missing/removing an eye). The sharingan functions as it normally would for an Uchiha, however it is more taxing for someone who is not an Uchiha as they cannot deactivate the Dojutsu.

If the eye is exposed, you lose an amount of chakra points equal to two times the chakra points it would cost to activate the Sharingan from the moment you expose it to every minute that passes thereafter. In order to keep the eye from draining your chakra constantly, you must cover it in some way: an eyepatch, cloth wrapping, a headband, etc. You can also simply keep the eye closed, but in combat, it is impossible to do so. Opening your eye requires no action, and removing a physical block requires an object interaction, but that means you do not need to use an action to activate the Sharingan.

Any technique facilitated or involving the Sharingan costs twice the amount of chakra that it normally would when used by a non-Uchiha.

Additional Sharingan Techniques

The Sharingan can further evolve, granting its user even more power. The following improvements are granted at the DM's discretion, but some criteria should be met before their use. Consider each ability to be a Very Rare or rarer magic item when determining rewards.

Izanagi

The Izanagi is a long-forgotten and forbidden technique that was used by the Uchiha during the Warring States era. It is a powerful Dojutsu that allows the user to rewrite reality itself. Banned from use due to its great cost, most knowledge of the technique was destroyed by the heads of the Uchiha clan after the Hidden Villages were formed.

The Izanagi can be used in the following ways:

  • Heal: You and up to twenty creatures you can see regain all of their Hit Points, and you end all effects on them that could be removed by the Greater Restoration spell.

  • Jutsu Immunity: Up to ten creatures you can see gain immunity to a particular jutsu or magical effect for the next 8 hours.

  • Resurrection: You can choose up to ten creatures who have died within the last minute and bring them back to life. They regain all their Hit Points, and any curses, diseases, or levels of exhaustion are removed. This will restore missing body parts and organs.

  • Reroll: One recent event is undone. Choose one D20 Test that has occurred since the end of your last turn, and force the creature to remake the roll. Reality reshapes itself to accommodate the new result. For example, Izanagi could undo an ally’s failed saving throw or a foe’s Critical Hit. You can force the reroll to be made with Advantage or Disadvantage, and you choose whether to use the reroll or the original roll.

  • Self-Preservation. For the next minute, whenever you die, you immediately regain Hit Points equal to half your Hit Point maximum (rounded up) and half your Chakra Point Maximum (rounded up). You then choose an open space 60 feet from where you died and appear in that space. When you revive, any conditions that you incurred since activating this ability also end. Any conditions you have before Izanagi's use are still present.

  • Reshape Reality: You may attempt to alter reality further for something not included in any of the other effects. To do so, state what you wish to accomplish to the DM as precisely as possible. The DM has great latitude in ruling what occurs in such an instance; the greater the ask, the greater the likelihood that something goes wrong. This jutsu might simply fail, the effect you desire might be achieved only in part, or you might suffer an unforeseen consequence as a result of how you worded your request.

You can choose to activate the Izanagi as an Action, or you can set a specific trigger that will automatically activate the technique under certain conditions. The conditions cannot be complex, and you must state what you wish the technique to accomplish as a result of the trigger. Examples include "When I die, I will be resurrected 1 hour after my death.", "The next Save I fail, I will reroll.", "When I am hit by a Critical Hit, I will force the attacker to reroll." You can still use Izanagi as an Action even if you have previously stated a trigger for the technique.

After the Izanagi jutsu resolves, the eye that used the technique goes blind and cannot be restored by any means.

Izanami

The Izanami is both the sister technique and the counter to Izanagi. Uchiha abused the Izanagi, using it to rewrite their fates whenever their actions brought about undesirable results. Their flippant use of the technique led to infighting and fostered a hostile environment where Uchiha would steal each other's eyes to make use of this powerful ability. To counter the use of the Izanagi, the Izanami was created. The Izanami traps a creature in a series of looping events that forces them to accept their fate and see the truth of reality.

You cast Izanami as an Action. Target one creature you can see within 60 feet of you. Within the next minute, you must select three Actions that the creature takes. If you do not, the Izanami is not cast. Once the third action is chosen, the creature automatically becomes trapped in the Izanami. They become Blinded, Deafened, Incapacitated, and their movement speed is reduced to 0. The creature continuously relives the three moments you selected until the truth of reality is revealed to them. This truth is determined by the DM and might not be outwardly helpful to you, but generally, the usage of this technique should alter a creature's alignment to incorporate the Good alignment. The duration of the jutsu varies depending on how long it takes the creature to accept its fate. Generally, this duration should not last for more than 24 hours.

This technique is a potent Genjutsu. Damaging a creature trapped within this Genjutsu does not break it. A creature is vulnerable in this state and could be easily dispatched, although the intent behind the technique is to be used as a form of rehabilitation. The Genjutsu cannot be dispelled by any means, and a creature immune to Genjutsu is not considered immune to this technique.

After you successfully trap a creature within this technique, the eye that used the Izanami goes blind and cannot be restored by any means.
