Running out of Chakra
Since chakra is the energy resource that a Ninja uses to accomplish their impressive feats, there will come a time when you runs out of chakra points. Running out of chakra points is dangerous for a Ninja because it leaves them vulnerable, but it can also be harmful for a ninja physically. If a ninja loses more than half their chakra point total from one source, they must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the ninja suffers one level of exhaustion.
Overspending
As seen many times in the series, a Ninja can go past what they would consider their chakra limits. In doing so, they become exhausted and sometimes physically injured. Since chakra points are such a precious resource mechanically, you can attempt to use your own vitality to cast a jutsu, but it comes at a steep price.
When you cast a jutsu and have no chakra points remaining, you can sacrifice your own life energy to cast the jutsu. After the jutsu has been cast, but before the end of the turn, roll a number of d8’s equal to the amount of chakra points you would have spent to cast the jutsu. You take necrotic damage equal to the amount you rolled. This necrotic damage cannot be resisted or reduced in any way. Your hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage rolled until you can take a short rest, at which point you can spend hit dice to restore the damage dealt.
If this damage brings you to 0 hit points, you fall unconscious and immediately suffer one level of exhaustion. If this damage reduces your hit point maximum to 0, you die.
