5 General Ways to Improve as a Player in TTRPGs
Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) offer players a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in fantastical worlds and engage in thrilling adventures. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, there are several ways you can enhance your skills and become a better player. Here are five general ways to improve:
1. Familiarize Yourself with the Rules
Every TTRPG has its own set of rules and mechanics that govern gameplay. Take the time to thoroughly read and understand the rulebook of the game you're playing. This will not only help you make informed decisions during the game but also allow you to contribute more effectively to the overall experience.
2. Develop Your Character
Creating a well-rounded and believable character is crucial in TTRPGs. Take the time to develop a backstory, personality traits, and motivations for your character. This will not only make the game more immersive for you but also provide opportunities for interesting role-playing interactions with other players and the game master. Much of this work is done prior to the start of a campaign, but it is ok to let these naturally develop as you play as well!
3. Collaborate with Other Players
TTRPGs are inherently collaborative, and working well with other players can greatly enhance the overall experience. Listen to and respect the ideas and contributions of your fellow players. Actively engage in group discussions and decision-making processes. By fostering a cooperative atmosphere, you'll create a more enjoyable and cohesive gaming experience for everyone involved.
Share the spotlight! I will go into more detail about this concept in another post, but I believe this is one of if not the most important aspects to being a corporative story teller. Don’t take up significant time at the table to accomplish solo tasks. Involve one or more other players if you need to take a moment away from the GM’s story. You should try to limit the amount of time you take from the plot at large, and let other players have their moments at the table. If other players at the table are struggling to find moments to shine, help them by sharing moments with them until they get more comfortable with the pacing of a game.
4. Enhance Your Communication Skills
Effective communication is essential in TTRPGs, both in and out of character. Clearly express your intentions and ideas to the game master and other players. Actively listen to others and ask clarifying questions when needed. Good communication will not only help in resolving conflicts but also enrich the storytelling and problem-solving aspects of the game.
5. Embrace Creativity and Flexibility
TTRPGs are a platform for creativity and imagination. Embrace opportunities to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions to challenges. Be open to unexpected twists and turns in the game's narrative and adapt your strategies accordingly. By embracing creativity and flexibility, you'll contribute to a dynamic and engaging gaming experience.
Specific Suggestions for Call of Cthulhu
Call of Cthulhu is a popular TTRPG set in a Lovecraftian horror universe. While it shares some similarities with other TTRPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, there are a few key differences in gameplay. Here are some specific suggestions for improving your skills in Call of Cthulhu:
1. Emphasize Investigation and Problem-Solving
Unlike combat-focused games like D&D, Call of Cthulhu places a strong emphasis on investigation and problem-solving. Sharpen your skills in deduction, research, and critical thinking. Pay attention to the details and clues provided by the game master, and work collaboratively with other players to unravel mysteries and uncover the truth.
2. Embrace the Horror Atmosphere
Call of Cthulhu is known for its dark and atmospheric setting. Immerse yourself in the horror elements of the game by embracing the eerie ambiance and suspenseful storytelling. Engage in role-playing moments that reflect the psychological toll of encountering cosmic horrors, and be prepared for the unexpected and potentially terrifying outcomes.
3. Prioritize Sanity and Mental Well-being
In Call of Cthulhu, characters' sanity is constantly at risk due to the horrors they encounter. Pay close attention to your character's mental well-being and role-play the effects of witnessing unimaginable terrors. Engage with the game master and other players to explore the psychological aspects of the game, allowing for deep character development and immersive storytelling. Sometimes, it’s better to act against what is in your or your party’s well being!
By following these general tips and specific suggestions for Call of Cthulhu, you'll be well on your way to becoming a better player in TTRPGs. Remember, practice and experience are key, so keep playing, learning, and enjoying the thrilling adventures that tabletop role-playing games have to offer.
